History of the Palm Center Church of Christ
The history of the Palm Center church of Christ. There are many things that happens to a congregation. We will not try to cover them all. Besides, just trying to cover the highlights is an amazing story in it self. The events begin to unfold in 1977. The MacGregor Park church of Christ sold the building on South Park Blvd and merged with Belford church of Christ. The families of Otis Burns, Marshall Thornton, Nat Smith and Charles Leonard saw a need for a congregation in this community. In February 1977 these brothers went to the brotherhood meeting and P.E. Stewart presented to the brotherhood our desire and the need for a chuch of Christ in this community. The brethern accepted the idea and set aside a fellowship day to help get the congregation started. During this fellowship at the Scenic Woods church of Christ on March 13, 1977 over .00 was given to help this new work.
Otis Burns, after searching this area for days, found a lady by the name of Mrs. Ellis who operated a Day Care Center. Mrs. Ellis let us usew the building on Sunday and Wednesday night for worship and bible study classes. Mrs. Ellis would not charge the churc anything, but we gave her .00 a week. Later, with the use of the air conditioner, we gave her .00 a month.
Now as we all know. With anything you do there will always be problems. Our first problem was choosing a name for the church location. The first name suggested was the South Park church of Christ. Now, this night not sound like a possible problem, but in March 1977 we were only two blocks off of South Park Blvd. Later the name of the street was changed to Martin Luther King Blvd. If we had used the name South Park we would have had to change the name after that street name was taken off of the Houston map. The second suggestion was since we would be moving out of the Day Care Center but staying in this area we chose the name, Palm Center church of Christ.
March 13, 1977 was the official day of worship which was also the same day of the fellowship. We stayed one year in the Day Care Center. During that first year we purchased the property here on Beekman Road. Five vacant lots, that have been vacant since this housing division was built. This may sound good, finding five vacant lots in the Palm Center area, but it led to our next problem. Being a young congregation, with no money in the treasury finding land was not the problem but getting the money to pay for it was a BIG problem. No bank would loan money to buy property. But for those who love and obey God, He can smooth out all mountains. The owners agreed to finance the property and one of the members put up a CD for collateral for the church to get the bank loan.
Now we need a building. During this first year after getting the property, we looked into ways of getting a building on the lots. One of the brothers found a portable building for sale. This might sound like a normal event, too, but this leads to yet another problem. We're in a even worst situation now. Besides no money in the treasury, we're in debt too. But God can make a way. The owners needed to have the building moved. They agreed to finance it if we would pay something down. One of the members borrowed money form his credit union to pay down on the building.
In March 1978 we moved into the portable building located at 6103 Beekman Road. We moved from the Day Care Center with 40 members and in less than 6 months we grew to over 100 members. The Palm Center church of Christ was the fastest growing congregation in the Houston area.
In March of 1979 we begin plans to build a building. In March 1983 it was agreed to start laying a foundation for the new building. The building was completed in November of 1983. We are thankful to God and give him the glory. Everything could not have fallen into place except for His help. And our commitment was and still is to use the building as a tool to Preach the Gospel of Christ to the lost, to edify the church and to help the poor and care for the sick.

Brief History of the Preachers who Served
In the begining P.E. Stewart servered as minister until February 1982. Then Elmo Adams served until 1991. Then we went to a two preacher concept. The men serving were Horace Robins and Arthur White until 1995. The next minister was LaVanne Pennington who served until 1997 because of his work schedule. Then thier was Napoleon Logan who served until 1999. Once again LaVanne Pennington was chosen again to preach. In 2001 Terrence Williams was chosen to work with LaVanne as co-prechers. Later, when LaVanne changed jobs, he resigned.
Also in 1991 was when we began our radio program call "Bible Questions and Answers" Comes on each Sunday morning at 8:30am on KCOH 1430AM radio. This is a live show where you can call in and get Bible answers to your Bible questions.
